What is WAM Outdoors?
img_20170215_203136Based at our own Woodland near Evesham our Outdoors Alternative Provision Project offers young people the opportunity to build confidence through learning new skills, develop resilience and perseverance through overcoming challenges and working as a team. Activities range from traditional forestry including coppicing and charcoal making; wood carving and small carpentry projects; tree identification & animal tracking; bushcraft and expedition skills. For vulnerable and at risk young people the outdoor environment provides a therapeutic backdrop that brings a sense of perspective and space that a classroom environment is less able to.

Why TOE?

“weekly sessions help influence his behaviour, relationships and risk taking improving positively”
(A Young Person’s Social Worker)

“Since having supportive, trusted male mentors in his life who are passionate and skilled about nature and the outdoors, he has changed his attitude towards life and is happier, less angry and more positive about his future.”
(A Young Person’s Educational Psychologist)

img_7625The project developed out of our community mentoring project from a recognition of the benefits of positive physical activity in the outdoors that connects vulnerable and at risk young people with the natural environment. It is particularly suited to those young people who have challenges accessing mainstream education but also beneficial as a reward activity or as a respite activity. We offer group sessions as well as intensive support for those who may benefit from 1:1 or 2:1 support. Please contact us on info@wamyouth.org.uk for more information or to make a referral.

We also run regular overnight hikes/camps and longer trips during school holidays.

We are a youth work charity and understand young people. Therefore we are committed to placing their needs before any programme and to persevering in building positive relationships based on trust and mutual respect. We believe this takes time and that we will see the most benefit to a young person when consistent support over a significant period of time is offered, rather than short term or one off interventions. With this in mind we place a high value on consistency of staff and operate with high ratios of staff to young people.
